"Words Spoken From The Heart
Enter Into The Heart"
Moses Ibn Ezra
Is God too busy to give us a baby?
Adoption and Infertility
Did you know that:
- In the Bible, the three couples who founded the Jewish faith (Abraham
and Sarah; Isaac and Rebecca; Jacob and Rachel) were all infertile.
- The passive acceptance of infertility as God's will is not the Biblical
approach.
- Many rabbis permit a variety of unconventional medical techniques
to help an infertile couple conceive, including in-vitro fertilization and
donor insemination.
- Adoption of an infant born to a gentile birthmother by a Jewish couple
does not make that baby Jewish. The baby needs a formal conversion.
- Judaism teaches that a child's true parent is the one that raises
him or her, not the one who gives birth.
- Adoption as a formal legal procedure is unknown in Jewish tradition.
There is no word in classical Hebrew for "adoption".
- Jewish laws forbid parents from not telling a child that he or she
was adopted.
- My wife and I have successfully adopted three times. Adoption is do-able
to any couple who has the right attitude, is persistent, and is prepared
to survive the roller coaster ride which is contemporary adoption.
